Socorro "Cocó" Herrera
My name is Socorro Herrera but everyone knows me as “Cocó”. I was born in Mexico City in 1960. During my childhood, my teacher Lourdes from the fourth grade, with her tenderness and dedication awakened my vocation and desire to teach. This dream became a reality when I graduated from the Escuela Normal Superior del Sur de Tamaulipas (Bachelor in Education).
By the age of 22 I graduated from the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Tamaulipas (IEST Anahuac) where I earned my Bachelor in Accounting, and later my CPA license in Mexico in 1985.
In 1983, I started working at the National Office of the Mexican Association of Breeders CEBU as an accountant and by the age of 23, I became the Manager of the National Office. I always had the drive to have my own Accounting Firm and in 1997 it became a reality when I helped my husband Jorge Herrera to open Herrera CPA. Since then we’ve made an effort to build a successful practice in the South Texas area, as well as helping clients from different states and countries.
I have more than 25 years of experience with QuickBooks and I became a Pro Advisor in their accounting software. Today I am the Financial Reporting Manager at Herrera CPA. My areas of expertise are QuickBooks Online training as well as consulting, accounting employee training, and business consulting.
In my professional life I have been able to combine both of my careers by sharing my accounting knowledge and to use my educational skills to teach the business owners and their employees to do their accounting internally. In many occasions they don’t have this knowledge, but with the right training, they can manage to do so.
During this process, one of the goals is to show the value accounting, a system that most of the time is not valued or is only used to comply with fiscal responsibilities. It should be used properly in all enterprises during the initial period of opening and the life of the business. This learning stage reaches the point where entrepreneurs fully understand the information in their financial statements accompanied by continuous reviews with corrections to keep the data up to date resulting in better administrative decisions.
I am a mother of 2 children: Victoria and JorgeAlberto. Being a mother has been my most important role. I strive everyday to achieve a balance between my spiritual, personal and professional life. Currently I’m teaching a Finance course with God’s perspective (Compass Catholic Ministries) along with my husband in our parish community St. Anthony de Padua.
My career has allowed me to share, with my clients, family and friends, the blessing of understanding that life is full of small achievements that lead us to enjoy one day at a time. This encourages us to give the best of ourselves and awaken the desire to improve in each area of our life.
